Week 1, Introduction to DC Circuits

Week 1, Introduction to DC Circuits

Summary: to determine the greatest resistance of the cable in order to supply enough voltage to the load. The length of a certain type of cable can be calculated accordingly. The total resistance of the cables is replaced by a resistor box.

Schematic:

Final setup:

At the beginning, the resistor box(cable) is set to zero.

Adjust the resistor box until the load voltage is 11V. The resistor box is 98 ohms.

Calculate the power efficiency and the maximum length of cable.

Notes: the power supply without any connection is 12.31V rather than 12V; therefore, the calculated cable length should be longer than the designed circuit which uses 12V. The power efficiency closely matches the ratio between the load resitance and the cable resistance, indicating that the result is reasonable.
